Pairings Set For Softball State Tournament Series
The postseason paths are set for area prep softball teams.
The IHSAA held the drawing to set up pairings for the 34th state tournament series Sunday night in Indianapolis.
Sectional play statewide for a total of 379 teams in four classes is set for May 21-26. One-game regionals are May 29 with four-team semistates June 2 and the four state championship games on June 9 at Purdue University.
Area high school softball squads will compete in sectional play at Elkhart Memorial, Fairfield, NorthWood and Triton in three weeks.
Warsaw will face Elkhart Central in a first-round matchup of the Class 4-A Elkhart Memorial Sectional. The Tigers, who sport a young team with just two seniors, are 5-8. Coach Kevin Dishman’s team is scheduled to play at Elkhart Central on May 15 in a regular season matchup.
Northridge and Concord, arguably the two strongest teams in the field at Memorial, drew the bye and will meet in the semifinals. The Raiders are the defending champion, while Concord leads the Northern Lakes Conference currently. The Minutemen, who posted a 17-6 NLC win at Warsaw Friday night, beat Northridge 3-2 on April 20 in their first of two league meetings.
Wawasee will take its youthful team, to Fairfield’s Class 3-A Sectional. The Warriors drew the bye and will meet the winner of the Fairfield-Tippecanoe Valley game in a semifinal contest. Wawasee, which won both the sectional and regional a year ago, is 5-7.
The field at Fairfield includes a trio of teams who are ranked in the latest coaches’ poll. Wawasee checked in at No. 18 with Fairfield at No. 22 and West Noble at No. 25.
NorthWood will take to the field right off the bat in its own Class 3-A sectional. The Panthers, whose roster has just a pair of seniors this Spring, face Knox in the opening game of the five-team field.
Triton will also be in action on opening night of its own Class 1-A Sectional. The Trojans face Argos. No. 5 South Central, which has won four straight sectional titles, drew the bye and plays West Central in a semifinal game at Triton.
The regional matchups for May 29 will have the Elkhart Memorial Sectional winner playing at the winner of the South Bend Adams Sectional, where Penn is the favorite. The NorthWood Sectional champion will travel to the winner of the Griffith Sectional in a Class 3-A regional game.
The Fairfield Sectional winner and the Triton Sectional champion will each host regional games. The Fairfield champion will host the Angola Sectional winner. The Triton Sectional winner will entertain the Lakewood Park Christian Sectional winner.
Semistate sites for the North for June 2 are West Lafayette Harrison (4-A), Twin Lakes (3-A) and Frankfort (1-A).
The State Finals will be contested at Bittinger Stadium on the Purdue campus on June 9. The Class 1-A finale kicks off action at 10:30 a.m. followed by the 2-A game at 1:30, the 3-A at 4:30 and the 4-A at 7:30.
