Triton Sports Wrap: April 19
Girls Tennis
Tritons’ girls tennis team collected a 4-1 win over visiting Rochester to move to 2-0 Thursday night.
Kolbie Mason put away Allie Bickle 1-1 at 1 singles, Hannah Wanemacher and Emma Ross handed Grace Daake and Alivia Riegle a similarly-lopsided 0-2 defeat at 1 doubles, and Megan McFarland and Emma Hepler held off Whitley Barkman and Ashlyn Foster 0-4 at two doubs. Amanda Baker outlasted Olivia Smith in a three-set tiebreaker at 3 singles, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(3), while Molly McFarland ended up on the wrong side of another three-setter with Rochester’s Abbie McCarter at 2 singles, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
Triton’s JV also won its meet, 3-1.
The Lady Trojans travel to LaVille for a Hoosier North Athletic Conference meet next Tuesday.
The tennis program announced it will now host a doubleheader with North Judson on April 23 starting at 5:30 p.m. The rescheduled match with North Judson on April 25 has been canceled.
Baseball
Triton’s baseball team completed its sweep of Hoosier North Athletic Conference opponent Culver Community with a 17-7 victory at home Thursday night.
Max Slusser went 3 for 5 with two RBIs and a run scored, Dylan Hensley drove in two runs and scored twice in a two-hit night, Keegan Mosier went 1 for 1 officially with a double, an RBI and three runs scored, and Ryan Kaufman drove in three runs and scored another three for Triton, which recorded 11 hits while finishing Culver in five a day after eking out a narrow 4-3 win over the Cavs on the road. Tye Orsund drew three walks for the Trojans, who moved to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the HNAC.
Lucas Newman got the start and the win, giving up three hits and three walks for two earned runs with five strikeouts over three innings of work. Vince Helton surrendered just one hit and three walks in two innings but gave up four earned runs relieving Newman in the fourth.
Damien Sullivan went 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI to lead Culver at the plate, and Weston Keller drove in three runs and scored another for the Cavs, who dipped to 1-4 and 0-2 in the HNAC.
The Trojans play an HNAC doubleheader at Pioneer Saturday, starting at 11 a.m.
Softball
Triton’s softball team rallied with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but it was too little, too late as the Lady Trojans suffered a 14-4 loss in five innings versus Manchester Thursday.
Taytum Hargrave recorded two hits for Triton, which was out-hit 9-4. Sydney Day drove in six runs for Manchester.
Mattie McKee earned the win inside the circle, striking out nine for the Squires. Nicole Sechrist took the loss, striking out two while going the distance.
The Trojans will look to bounce back quickly with a game at Culver Girls Academy tonight at 5 p.m.
Boys Golf
Triton’s boys golf team collected wins over host Plymouth, South Bend Adams, Marian and Bremen and only lost out to Culver Military by nine strokes in a meet at Pretty Lake Thursday.
The Trojans carded a 179 to CMA’s winning 170 score but finished ahead of the host Pilgrims’ 185, as well as Adams’ 203, Marian’s 213 and Bremen’s 214.
Beau Hepler shot 42 to lead the Trojans, followed by Chase Butler’s 42. Isaac Wall turned in a 48, and Brock Watkins was close behind with a 49, while Keegan Westafer shot 52 for Triton, which improved to 9-1.
Triton will join the field at the Whitko Invitational Saturday, starting at 9 a.m.
Triton’s JV also beat out all but CMA Thursday, carding a 199 to Culver’s 181 and well ahead of Plymouth’s 234, Marian’s 236, Bremen’s 253 and Adams’ 255.
Ross Johnson and Brendan Wareham both shot 49 to lead the team, which moved to 8-1. John Kuntz shot 50, John Gardner was a stroke back, and Kaden Atkins’ 53 was the JV Trojans’ toss-out.
