Oral History Exhibit Opens at Nappanee Center
Evelyn Lehman Culp Heritage Collection staff have been collecting oral histories from Nappanee residents for close to 40 years. Visit the Nappanee Center to hear the recorded stories of the businesses and people who helped build the city in a new multi-media exhibit entitled “The People’s Nappanee” at the Nappanee Center, Monday, June 1, through Wednesday, Sept. 30.
The Heritage Collection is maintained by the Nappanee Public Library and housed within the Nappanee Center, located at 302 W. Market St. Hours are 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. For more information contact the library.
Library Challenges Community to Read 2.5 Million Pages
The library’s annual summer reading initiative is back and bigger than ever. Staff have set the bar at 2.5 million pages, and with last year’s record-breaking numbers, they are confidant that the goal can be met among card holders. Participants who help reach the goal between Monday, June 1, and Friday, July 31, will have the chance to win achievement level prices from the library’s “Hero Prize Box,” Veni’s Sweets, Coppes Commons, as well as some very exciting grand prizes. One Kindle Fire HD e-reader grand prize will be given away in the following age groups: children through age 4, children ages 5-10, teens age 11-17, and adults 18 and up.
Free summer-use cards are available for any child age 18 and under living within the WaNee school district with participation in the summer reading challenge. Registration and reading begin Monday, June 1, on site at the library.
Weekly programs for families are also planned in June and July. Learn the stories of many different types of heroes with special guests fro 3 p.m. until 4 p.m. Tuesdays. Enjoy comedy, magic, visits from zoo animals, American folk tales, music, science and much more.
In addition to these activities, the library is planning ongoing open Lego build times, movie matinees, craft projects and games throughout the summer. For more information on the reading challenge and all summer activities, contact the library.
Up-cycling Project At Teen Tuesday
Kids in grade six through high school are invited to make up-cycled jewelry from pop tabs and hardware washers at the next ‘Teen Tuesday’ program at the library. The project is suitable for both girls and guys. Meet in the Cube, the library’s makerspace, from 4 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 2. All materials will be supplied and snacks will be provided. No registration is necessary.
Board of Trustees Meeting
The board of trustees at the library will meet in regular session at 7 a.m. Thursday, May 28, at 157 N. Main St. The public is invited to attend.
