The Life Of A Professional YouTuber
WARSAW — Being a YouTuber is a hobby for many, but for lifetime Syracuse resident Aaron Bushong, it’s a professional nine to five job. Bushong, who works for Jas. Townsend and Sons, spends most of his days editing and producing videos for his business’ popular YouTube channel.
With over 40,000 subscribers and 4.3 million channel views, the channel has begun and grown exponentially since Bushong began working with the production team.
“My job is to help produce and edit videos for our historical and educational YouTube channel that focuses on the 18th century,” said Bushong. “We do what we do to get people who are interested in history to become more passionate about history, especially reenacting.”
The channel puts out multiple videos every week, but regularly every Monday and Thursday. “Other than that, we just sprinkle in whatever we want.”
“We don’t really fly by the seat of our pants. I’m never surprised coming into work. Everything is scheduled out about three weeks,” he said. “Typical workdays are already planned, and I will usually go into the office with a checklist already in mind.”
Using Vegas Pro 12, Bushong spends his days behind a desk, working on every individual shot that the company produces. “Sometimes, for more complicated videos, I’ll spend an entire day on one video,” he said.
In explaining how a video was made, Bushong said that each one takes around three hours to shoot, and a few more hours to edit and publish. Depending on the complexity of the video, editing could take from one hour to an entire day.
While he does work closely with every video, when it comes to creativity, Bushong said that he almost exclusively is creative with editing only. The content of every video is planned by the script-writers.
For Bushong, making videos has always been a way of life. “Oh yeah, my buddies and I would make war movies when we were kids. We’d pretend to shoot each other, and create videos.”
It became more serious, however, when Bushong’s father, Tim, helped him research video editing software, and he started editing home videos. “I’ve been making videos since before YouTube even existed,” he explained.
Bushong explained that his life outside of work is more affected by the fact that he loves his job, rather than what he is actually doing. “When you wake up in the morning, and you want to go to work, it’s awesome. I would do this forever if I could. I really love what I do, and my wife, Kara, is just happy to support me because she knows I’m doing something I love.” Bushong’s job affects his life because he loves it, and it allows him to live his life outside of work stress-free.
Outside of his company’s channel, Bushong has also done editing work on multiple music videos, and has been contacted about doing video work around Kosciusko County. Using what he has learned from his job, Bushong hopes to continue video-editing for the rest of his life.
