Why did you buy your vehicle? Why did you buy certain foods? Why did you buy certain clothes? Why do you buy any product or service? Why do you buy into a vision or direction of an individual or organization?
I want to make it clear from the start when I say “buying” I am talking about much more than buying a product or service. We also buy into the thoughts and vision of our spouse, boss, church and friends. As we go forward today remember buying is more than just a product or service.
All too often we think we buy for logical reasons. We hear facts and figures and think this is a good deal, so we buy. Certainly pricing and some other basic things come in to play, but facts, figures and logic are only a small part in your buying decisions. You only buy for one reason – emotion.
There is actually a chemical process which occurs in the neo-cortex part of the brain. These are part of the process which helps you make your decisions to buy. The chemicals are oxytocin, serotonin and dopamine. You can think of these as the feel good chemicals. They can be triggered by words, touch, smells and more. They way they work is very fascinating, which should be a topic for another day.
Many of you may know my wife, Peggy, is The Cake Lady in North Webster. She meets with and serves many people with various budgets and taste in food. Does she sell them food? Does she sell them cake? No! I can hear many of you saying I am off my rocker. If she doesn’t sell food or cake, what does she sell?
She sells feelings – memories and relationships. The food, which is the best in the world, is a conduit which helps people build relationships and share wonderful memories. oxytocin, the “love” chemical, is released when we think about and spend time with friends and family.
Who doesn’t like a sale? You bought because the salesman made you an offer you couldn’t refuse right? No! You still bought based on emotion. This time it was because buying at a low price made you “feel” good about saving money and spending your money in a wise way. It is still was an emotional buy.
Why do we attend a certain church, belong to a community organization, or work for a particular business? Is it the list of benefits they all offer? Is it their 10-point plan to make a new product? No! The main reason is we buy into the message or direction the leaders are sharing.
We buy into the motivation the boss shares. We buy into the vision of the pastor. We buy into the dreams of the leaders of our community group. We are never inspired or buy into a 10 point plan – that’s logic. We buy into a dream or a message – that’s emotion. There is always a why behind the buy.
