North Webster Public Library Announcements
The final tally is in for the Youth Summer Reading Program. A total of 364 children and teens read a whopping total of 6,320 hours! Congratulations to all the readers this summer for your outstanding efforts.
Special recognition goes to our top readers. In the children’s Dig Into Reading Club, the top readers were Abigayle Smith, who read 95 hours, and Gabriel Coble, Kiah Farrington, Elise Swain and Noah Swain who each logged 75 hours. Top teen readers in the Beneath The Surface Club were Rachel Fishburn, with 330 hours of reading, Marcus and Tyler Baldacci, with 260 hours each; Samuel Fishburn, who read 210 hours, and Kasey Gunkle, logging 205 hours.
Although summer reading may be over and the kids have headed back to school, the library continues to offer resources, materials and activities to make reading and learning fun. The teens will gather at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22, for “The Hunger Games Competition” during which they’ll take the “minute-to-win-it” challenge to earn their snacks. Teens are invited to join in the fun and bring their friends.
On the adult side, Writer’s Corner meets at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 19, to share the essays they’ve written about gardening. Anyone who likes to write, whether you’re an amateur or a published author, is invited to join this lively group. READ Book Club also meets at 5:30 p.m. Monday to discuss Deadlock by James Scott Bell. If you like to read interesting books and discuss them with others, this club is for you. It meets the third Monday of each month. In September, the READ Book Club will discuss Saving Cee Cee Honeycut by Beth Hoffman. Stop by the Library, reserve your copy, and join in the discussion.
Janette Stackhouse (aka The Herb Lady) will present the final class in her three-part “Hooked on Herbs” series at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24. In this last session, she will show you how to harvest fresh herbs and preserve them for enjoyment all winter long. No advance registration is required and the class is free.
Save the date, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 8, for the 2013 North Webster Cemetery Walk. This is a “living history” event in which enactors are stationed throughout the cemetery portraying local residents who are buried there. Those being portrayed were selected from essays researched and written by our patrons. The annual Cemetery Walk is an engaging and entertaining way to learn about local history and the people who made up the fabric of our community in years gone by. The Cemetery Walk is free, so mark your calendars and plan to bring your family and friends.
