Saundra K. ‘Sandy’ Cobbum — UPDATED
Saundra K. “Sandy” Cobbum, 75, Syracuse, passed away at 6:58 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 10, 2019, at her home. She was born on April 12, 1944, in Muncie, to Byron and Nellie Monzelle (Hines) Jester.
She graduated in 1962 from Muncie Central High School, 1966 from Ball State University in Muncie and in 1972 with a Master of Arts in Education. She was married Nov. 24, 1966, in Muncie, to Owen K. Cobbum who survives and moved to Syracuse area in 1966 from Muncie but had been a summer resident there all of her life. She was a homemaker and formerly worked for the Wawasee Community School Corporation as a special needs job coach.
She was a member of the North Webster Church of God where she assisted with the youth group for many years, attended the boat-in worship on Lake Wawasee in the summer, and formerly attended the Calvary United Methodist Church in Syracuse. She was a member of the Lakeland Kiwanis in North Webster where she formerly served on the board of directors and served on the scholarship committee. In April 2019, she received the Distinguished Member Award from the Kiwanis International for bringing in new members and her 25 years as Director of Student Leadership at North Webster Elementary, Wawasee Middle School, and Wawasee High School. She formerly served on the board of directors for Teen Parents Succeeding in Syracuse, was a junior varsity cheerleading coach at Wawasee High School, and was very passionate about Thunder Run Wooden Boats on Lake Wawasee. She enjoyed her family and spending time on the lake.
She is survived by her husband: Owen Cobbum, Syracuse; three daughters: Cathy (Rev. Dennis) Ticen, Terre Haute; Christy (Pat) Downey, Fort Myers, Fla.; and Cindy (Jason) Parent, Fort Wayne; son, Craig (Agnes) Cobbum, Annapolis, Md. 13 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15, at Owen Family Funeral Home, 1001 S. Huntington St., Syracuse. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, at Calvary United Methodist Church, 801 S. Huntington St, Syracuse, with Pastor Dennis Ticen officiating. Burial will take place in the Syracuse Cemetery.
