Kacynda Northrup

A case that brought about a manhunt in Milford last summer had the female half of that incident in court today.

Kacynda Northrup, 24, of Leesburg, was in the Dollar General store in Milford on Aug. 21, 2012, when she was stopped by store personnel for shoplifting. A male subject who was with her at the time was released when he was not found to be in possession of any stolen items, but he did lead police on a manhunt when he armed himself with a crossbow and fled the scene on foot. Police arrested Northrup, who was wanted on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear. She was also found to be in possession of methamphetamine.

Kosciusko Circuit Court Judge Mike Reed today sentenced Northrup on two class D felony charges including possession of methamphetamine and theft.

Attorney Jay Rigdon, representing Northrup, told the court that, since her arrest, Northrup “appears to have put her mind to” putting her past drug problems behind her. “She’s confident she’ll be successful … and has taken some steps to continue down that path,” said Rigdon.

Northrup also told the judge, “I’m trying very hard,” to which Judge Reed responded, “I hope you’re right and I wish you good luck,” and then informed her this would be her “last chance.”

Northrup was sentenced to a total of 3 years in the Indiana Department of Corrections, but Reed suspended all of that and ordered her on probation for and a half years. “If you mess up on probation, you’re subject to the balance of the terms.”
