Wawasee Gymnastics: Atwood Leads The Way
ANGOLA — The Wawasee gymnastics team had its first dual meet of the season Tuesday evening. The long haul to take on Angola turned out to be worth the trip as Wawasee enjoyed a 99.05-90.70 win over the Hornets.
The Warriors won each event, but had their biggest margin of separation on beam with a 25.250-20.650 advantage over Angola. Regan Atwood led all gymnasts on beam with a 9.3. Aundreya Wegener recorded an 8.0 to claim second for Wawasee in the event while Alyssa Minnix took third for the visitors with a 7.950.
Atwood took first in every event, including the all-around. On vault the junior posted an 8.750 while Angola’s Karlie Hutchins took second (8.6) and Minnix was third (8.55). On bars, Atwood led the way with an 8.3, besting teammates Jada Parzygnot and Haleigh Smarr who each had a 7.85. Minnix and Hutchins each tied for fourth with scores of 7.450.
On the floor was where Atwood had some of her tightest competition. Wawasee’s stud earned first with an 8.850 to beat out Angola’s Emily Bracey’s 8.450. Minnix took third with an 8.4.
In the all-around, Atwood posted a 35.2, Minnix was second with a 32.350, Bracey was third with a 32.1, Wegener took fourth with a 31.5 and the top five was rounded out by Hutchins’ 30.3.
In the JV meet it was Wawasee’s Katie Haines earning first in the all-around with a 27.05. Haines took first on vault (8.0), beam (5.7) and floor (7.4). Wegener took first on JV bars for Wawasee with a 7.05.
“We were excited to have out first dual meet and especially happy to come out with a win,” stated Wawasee head coach Nika Prather. “We have one day to work on some weak areas before a very tough meet with Carroll.”
Wawasee (1-0) will travel to take on Fort Wayne Carroll Thursday evening.
