WARSAW – The Warsaw Police Department and the Whitley County Sheriff’s Office have both been seeing an uptick in scams during this holiday season.
The Warsaw Police Department received a report from a local business on Wednesday, Dec. 17, about a scam. A man called the business and advised he was an employee of NIPSCO.
In their recent Facebook post, WPD stated, “The business owner was told that he had to pay his utility bill, or the electric would be shut off. That makes it hard to power the Christmas lights. The naughty perpetrator was also phishing for personal information.”
A Whitley County Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook post stated they received a report of someone impersonating an officer from the sheriff’s office. WCSO’s post also stated that these scammers want the person to post bond money or pay for an ankle bracelet for an inmate. “Some of the scammers are wanting people to Venmo them money or buy gift cards.”
Both departments have put out the statement that, “If you’re in doubt, hang up. Never give any personal details unless you have verified the source.” They also advise not to give out any banking details, as scammers can use that to fund their next scams.Â
If anyone believes they are being scammed, contact the local law enforcement offices.
