News Release
BLOOMINGTON — Indiana University has ended restrictions on fraternity activities at its Bloomington campus, allowing chapters in good standing to resume social events. The decision was communicated to fraternity leaders on Thursday, Nov. 20 and took effect Monday, Dec. 1.
The restrictions were imposed earlier in November after the university received multiple hazing reports involving several fraternities. IU halted social functions, philanthropy events, large gatherings, tailgates, alcohol related activities, new member education and other group events while it investigated the incidents.
Cease and desist orders were issued to Phi Kappa Psi, Alpha Epsilon Pi and Tau Epsilon Phi following reports of hazing this fall. At least two people were hospitalized after incidents linked to Phi Kappa Psi, and three people were injured in incidents involving Alpha Epsilon Pi. IU also previously suspended the Lambda Chapter of Sigma Chi through fall 2028 after a separate investigation concluded in June. Besides events, the university’s measures affected freshmen seeking to move from residence halls into fraternity housing.
With the restrictions lifted, IU will again allow first year students to apply for housing exceptions, although they must withdraw from dorm contracts by Monday, Dec. 14 if they plan to relocate.
The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression contacted the university on Friday, Nov. 21 to challenge the restrictions, which the group argued were overly broad. IU acknowledged receiving the organization’s letter and noted that the decision to restore fraternity activities had already been communicated the previous day.
IU stated that all fraternity events must continue to comply with policies from the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life. The university has not released further details about the decision to reinstate activities.
