INDIANAPOLIS — Two participants in the Indianapolis Monument Marathon died Saturday, Nov. 8 after suffering separate medical emergencies during the race, according to event organizers.
Beyond Monumental, the organization that hosts the annual marathon, said the incidents were unrelated and that both runners received immediate care from on-site medical teams and local first responders before being transported to nearby hospitals.
The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified the runners as 40-year-old bank employee Kyle Fisher of Cincinnati, Ohio, and 71-year-old substance abuse counselor John Clifford Mace, Fillmore. Both were near the finish line when they suffered their medical emergencies, which have still not been determined.
Organizers said they are working with medical and public safety officials and are offering support to those affected. They expressed gratitude to emergency personnel for their “care and professionalism” in responding to the incidents.
The Monumental Marathon, one of the Midwest’s largest running events, draws thousands of runners each year to downtown Indianapolis for its marathon, half marathon and 5K races.
