PLYMOUTH – More information has been released on the arrest of an Indianapolis man following a vehicle pursuit that initially began in Elkhart and ended in Marshall County.
Jamarius Tyron Bryant, 37, Indianapolis, is charged with three counts of attempting to commit aggravated battery, all level 3 felonies; three counts of attempting to commit battery resulting in serious bodily injury, all level 5 felonies; two counts of resisting law enforcement, both level 6 felonies; and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in bodily injury and resisting law enforcement, both class A misdemeanors.
On Oct. 1, the Indiana State Police were notified by the Elkhart County Police Department of a vehicle pursuit in Elkhart. Officers said they attempted to apprehend the driver of a stolen vehicle. The vehicle belonged to Enterprise Rental Car.
According to court documents, during the pursuit, the driver was seen swerving the vehicle at children, hitting one child. Elkhart terminated the pursuit.
Enterprise representatives said the vehicle’s GPS location showed it at a gas station in Lapaz. When officers went to approach the vehicle, its driver fled in the vehicle, traveling at high rates of speed and moving southbound in northbound lanes. At one point during the pursuit, the fleeing driver allegedly drove toward the front of a police car in an intentional manner before swerving away.
As the pursuit continued, the driver maneuvered in an erratic manner while passing a construction zone, school bus, and northbound vehicles on the shoulder of the roadway. The driver again swerved at another police car in an intentional manner.
At one point, officers deployed a tire deflation device and retreated from the roadway to remain unseen by the suspect. However, the suspect exited the east side of the roadway, intentionally driving toward two police officers. As the pursuit continued, the suspect hit a vehicle occupied by an adult woman and child, who were both taken to Plymouth Hospital for injuries.
Eventually, the vehicle came to a stop due to disabling damage and was quickly surrounded by police vehicles. The suspect, later identified as Bryant, attempted to flee on foot but a nearby witness grabbed him as officers deployed a taser and took Bryant into custody.
Bryant allegedly told police he was running because he did not want to go to jail.
Bryant was booked in the Marshall County Jail on Oct. 1.
