INDIANAPOLIS — Fans attending Indianapolis Colts games at Lucas Oil Stadium are entering the venue faster this season thanks to new self-scan ticketing technology installed by a global company with local roots.
The stadium has been outfitted with Alvarado UltraQ Pedestals that allow fans to scan their own tickets upon entry. The devices replace handheld scanners used by staff, which the company said sometimes caused delays and inaccurate attendance counts.
The new pedestals feature LED light bars and touchscreen displays. At the North Gate, responsible for about 60% of all entries, 18 units can process as many as 21,000 tickets. Switzerland-based Dormakaba, the creator of the device, said the change has allowed most fans to reach their seats several minutes earlier than in past seasons.
The technology also allows stadium employees to shift their focus toward customer service rather than ticket scanning. Officials said staff can now assist fans and manage the flow of crowds more efficiently.
The Colts began testing the pedestals last year and have since expanded their use to every entry point at Lucas Oil Stadium. The system is now also used for concerts and other large events at the venue.
Dormakaba, which specializes in access and security systems and operates its U.S. headquarters in Indianapolis, said the project reflects a growing trend toward contactless and digital entry in major sports and entertainment facilities.
