STEUBEN COUNTY — Fort Wayne-based Stillwater Hospice began providing services in Steuben County, on Wednesday, Oct. 1, extending its coverage area to 13 counties.
Stillwater is now the only nonprofit hospice provider based in the region, offering in-home and facility-based care for patients in residential homes, assisted living facilities and nursing communities. The growth also marks the nonprofit’s first major geographic growth in several years
The expansion includes an investment of about $185,000 and an initial team made up of a registered nurse case manager, social worker, spiritual care counselor, certified nursing assistant and admissions nurse. Some roles were filled internally, while others were hired from the local community. Stillwater is also seeking volunteers to assist with companionship, administrative work and other supportive activities.
Stillwater Hospice, founded in 1888, operates a 14-bed hospice home and maintains partnerships with regional hospitals, including Cameron Hospital in Angola. The move north aims to increase access to end-of-life and palliative care for rural Hoosiers.
In addition to hospice services, the organization runs the Peggy F. Murphy Community Grief Center in Fort Wayne, which offers free counseling and support programs for adults coping with loss.
Officials say Stillwater is exploring additional expansion opportunities as part of its long-term goal to strengthen hospice and grief support services across northeast Indiana.
