Area Accident Reports
Kosciusko County
Officers with the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office investigated the following accidents:
- 5:46 a.m. Monday, Oct. 6, North Turkey Creek Road and East CR 1000N, Syracuse. Driver: Sirenna Tom, 25, CR 1200W, Cromwell. Tom’s vehicle hit a deer. Damage estimated at $5,000.
- 7:38 a.m. Sunday Oct. 5, East High Street, at Prairie Street, Atwood. Drivers: Paul Grove, 53, Stella Drive, Elkhart; and Neil D. Bammerlin, 60, CR 100S, Warsaw. Grove was driving north and did not see the stop sign at the intersection, causing him to hit Bammerlin’s vehicle. Damage estimated at $25,000.
- 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, East CR 1200N, at North Kern Drive, Syracuse. Drivers: Christopher Young, 32, Water Street, Ligonier; and Mary Sholtey, 45, CR 350E, Syracuse. Young and Sholtey were both traveling east on CR 1200N. Young went to pass Sholtey in a no passing zone, and Sholtey was making a left turn, causing the vehicle to hit Young’s vehicle. Damage estimated at $10,000.
- 5:07 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, West CR 1350N, at North CR 400W, Milford. Driver: Maureen Kuhns, 65, CR 1250N, Milford. Kuhns was driving south on CR 400W, and was at the stop sign. Kuhn looked both ways, and crossed the intersection, where the vehicle struck a horse and buggy being driven by Regina Slabaugh, 49, CR 1100N, Nappanee. The horse received injuries to all four legs, and the buggy sustained damage to its front end. No other injuries reported. Damage estimated at $10,000.
- 3:01 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, EMS B33A Lane, and EMS B33A1 Lane, Warsaw. Driver: Michael Rhodes, 45, Gorham Lane, Kalamazoo, Mich. Rhodes was traveling north on EMS B33A Lane when the vehicle hit a low-hanging cable line, causing damage to the roof of the vehicle. Damage estimated at $5,000.
- 7:34 a.m. Friday, Oct. 3, North SR 15, at West CR 400N, Warsaw. Drivers: Jason Velazquez, 17, Old SR 15, Warsaw; and Scott VanWesten, 37, West Levi Lee Road, Warsaw. Both vehicles were driving south on North SR 15, when VanWesten’s vehicle slowed to make a right turn. Velazquez was speaking to his passenger, and was unable to avoid rear-ending VanWesten’s vehicle. Velazquez’s airbags deployed, and Velazquez was transported to Parkview Hospital in Warsaw for right leg pain. A passenger in Velazquez’s car, Jan Carlos, 14, Warsaw, was also transported to Parkview Hospital Warsaw for abdominal pain. Damage estimated at $25,000.
- 7:16 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, East CR 1250N, and North East Wawasee Drive, Syracuse. Driver: Dante Fernandez, 26, CR 900W, Cromwell. Fernandez’s vehicle struck a deer. Damage estimated at $5,000.
Fulton County
Officers with the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office investigated the following accidents:
- 7:15 a.m. Monday, Oct. 6, West SR 110 and North CR 700W, Culver. Driver: Van Hissong, 62, Culver. Hissong’s vehicle hit a deer.
- 6:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 6, East CR 400S and South CR 500E, Macy. Driver: Amanda Ward, 31, Rochester. No further information available.
- 2:04 a.m. Monday, Oct. 6, 7405 S. SR 17, Kewanna. Driver: Zachary Winn, 27, Royal Center. Winn’s vehicle overturned into a field. He was later arrested for allegedly operating a vehicle while intoxicated and driving while suspended.
- 4:03 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, West CR 500N and North CR 800W, Rochester. Driver: Noah Pratt, 21, Rochester. Pratt’s vehicle hit a pole.
- 6:38 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, 1035 W. 200N, Rochester. Driver: unknown. A person reported an unknown driver hit their fence.
- 8:14 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, West CR 650S and South CR 600W, Kewanna. Driver: Kyle Moudy, 34, Rochester. Moudy’s vehicle hit a deer.
