WESTFIELD — More than 1,000 people gathered at Grand Park on Saturday, Sept. 6 for the ninth yearly Walk for Graham, an event supporting and raising funds for families affected by spinal muscular atrophy.
SMA is a rare genetic disease that causes progressive muscle weakness by affecting the nerves that control voluntary movement. It is the leading genetic cause of death in infants.
Advances in treatment, including three FDA-approved therapies in the past decade, have changed the outlook for many patients, but advocates emphasize that continued research remains vital.
The fundraiser has generated more than $1 million since it began in 2017 as a small celebration for Graham Vollmer’s second birthday. Organized by his family, the event has grown into one of Indiana’s largest gatherings dedicated to SMA awareness, drawing participants and families from across the state.
This year’s walk featured 30 SMA families, who shared stories, milestones and support.
In addition to the walk, attendees participated in family-friendly activities including games, music, food and a silent auction. Organizers said the event has become a cornerstone for Indiana’s SMA community, providing both financial support and an opportunity for families to connect.
Donations to the cause can be made through the Walk for Graham website.
