FORT WAYNE — Allen County has become the first county in Indiana to receive the “Certified Welcoming” designation from the national nonprofit Welcoming America.
The honor, announced Friday Sept. 19 during the Welcoming Fort Wayne Awards at Purdue Fort Wayne, places the county among 32 local governments nationwide recognized for fostering inclusive communities.
The designation highlights efforts to create an environment where immigrants and refugees can thrive alongside longtime residents. Welcoming America evaluates communities on their policies and programs supporting inclusion, civic engagement and equitable access to services.
Local officials focused on the role newcomers play in strengthening Allen County’s economy and workforce. A 2023 study on new Americans in the county found that foreign-born residents contribute to population growth, launch businesses and help fill labor needs.
Leaders also noted the cultural and social impact of immigrants through participation in schools, neighborhoods and civic life.
Welcoming America, founded in 2009, partners with governments and nonprofits nationwide to advance belonging and inclusion. The organization frames its work as both a moral and economic imperative, arguing that communities are stronger and more competitive when they embrace diversity.
With the designation, Allen County joins a select group of cities and counties nationwide committed to sustaining policies and practices that support newcomers and long-term residents alike.
