INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Department of Transportation is expanding its automated worksite speed control program, adding new enforcement locations in Hancock and Steuben counties beginning next week.
The Indiana Safe Zones initiative, which uses truck-mounted devices to capture images of vehicles exceeding posted limits by 11 mph or more, aims to reduce crashes and protect workers in construction areas. Violations are verified before being mailed to the vehicle owner.
The program launched in 2024 along SR 70 in Hancock County and is currently active in the Clear Path SR 465 and SR 69 work zone in Indianapolis and on SR 65 near Lowell. INDOT officials said enforcement near Lowell will end once construction wraps up later this month.
On or after Sept. 15, Safe Zones cameras will return to SR 70 between mile markers 105 and 109 near Greenfield and begin monitoring SR 80 and SR 90 traffic between mile markers 142 and 143 near Fremont.
INDOT Commissioner Lyndsay Quist said the program has already cut excessive speeding by about 70 percent at active sites. Under state law, the program can operate at up to four locations at a time.
Transportation Secretary Matt Ubelhor urged drivers to slow down and remain alert in work zones, emphasizing safety for both motorists and crews.
