Betty Ruth Brainard, a beloved mother, grandmother and friend, passed away on Monday, Aug. 4, 2025, at the Peabody Healthcare Center in North Manchester. Born on June 4, 1943, to Benjamin Franklin and Grace (Ferguson) Reeves, in Grayson, Ky., Betty lived a life filled with deep love for her family.
In February of 1958, Betty married Tom Brainard Sr., with whom she shared a life filled with love, laughter and the joys of a large family. Together, they had eight children. Betty proudly spoke of her children and grandchildren, sharing stories of what they were doing in life. Tom later passed away on Oct. 7, 2006.
Professionally, Betty found fulfillment as a nurses aide in several retirement communities and served as activities director at Peabody Retirement Community. She worked hard to provide for her family, making sure they had what they needed.
Betty had a vibrant personality; she was a social butterfly who cherished conversations with anyone she met. Her affinity for thrifting and rummage sales served as a testament to her resourceful spirit and eye for treasures. Known for her unwavering support for the underdog, she rooted for those in need. Her profound love for music, particularly for George Jones, solidified her place as his No. 1 fan. With a smile that could light up any room, Betty will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know her.
The loving memory of Betty Ruth Brainard will be forever cherished by her son, Tom (Betty J.) Brainard, Sidney; daughters, Mary Sroufe, Liberty Mills, Anita (Michael) Gloyeski, North Manchester, Crystal (David) Dill, Liberty Mills, Kathy Greene, Liberty Mills, and Rebecca (Chris Chubb) Stinson, Warsaw; 21 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and Carolyn Whitley, who was raised like her sister. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Tom Brainard Sr.; daughter, Sheila Hackworth; son, Roy Brainard; brothers, John, Frank, Fred and George Reeves; sister, Mary Jordan; and granddaughter, April Greene.
Family and friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at McKee Mortuary, 1401 SR 114W, North Manchester. Funeral services will begin at the conclusion of calling with Pastor J.P. Freeman officiating. Burial will be held at South Whitley Cemetery, South Whitley.
