INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana has been ranked as the state with the best road quality in the United States, according to a recent report from the U.S. News and World Report.
The ranking, based on data from the Federal Highway Administration, measured the percentage of road miles in poor condition across all 50 states. Indiana, long known as the Crossroads of America, topped the list with the lowest percentage of deteriorated roadways.
The report evaluated both urban and rural road conditions and credited Indiana’s ongoing infrastructure investment as a contributing factor to the high ranking.
The top 10 states for best road quality, from best to worst, were Indiana, South Dakota at No. 2, Kansas at No. 3, Wyoming at No. 4, Vermont at No. 5, Nebraska at No. 6, Tennessee at No. 7, Idaho at No. 8, Georgia at No. 9 and North Dakota at No. 10.
The bottom 10 states with the poorest road quality, were Oklahoma at No. 41, Pennsylvania at No. 42, California at No. 43, Maryland at No. 44, Washington at No. 45, Mississippi at No. 46, Connecticut at No. 47, New Mexico at No. 48, Hawaii at No. 49 and Rhode Island at No. 50..
