Pippin opens at the Bristol Opera House
News Release
ELKHART— Elkhart Civic Theatre is thrilled to present the groundbreaking musical Pippin, opening at the Bristol Opera House on July 25 and 26 and Aug.1, 2 and 3.
With music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Roger O. Hirson, this imaginative, thought-provoking show tells the tale of a young prince’s quest to find purpose and meaning in a chaotic world.
Directed by Brock Butler, with musical direction by Roy Bronkema and choreography by Heather Holland, Pippin offers a bold reimagining of a Broadway classic. This production is supported by Assistant Director Stacey Nickel.
Elkhart Civic Theatre receives generous support from Season Sponsors Laura and Jack B. Smith, Jr., and Gaska Tape, with media sponsorship from WNIT/PBS Michiana.
About The Show
Originally debuting on Broadway in 1972, Pippin follows the journey of a young prince, the son of King Charlemagne, as he searches for happiness and fulfillment.
He explores glory on the battlefield, indulgence in sensual pleasures, and the lure of political power — even committing patricide. Ultimately, Pippin discovers that meaning is not found in grand gestures but in the quiet, everyday moments of life.
In this daring new interpretation, director Brock Butler sets the story within a 1972 cult reminiscent of Charles Manson’s followers. “When Pippin debuted on Broadway, the Vietnam War was still raging, and the cultural revolution was in full swing.
“Our production places the Leading Player and her followers in a Manson-like cult, using only minimal props in an abandoned theatre to bring the tale to life,” says Butler. “By stripping it down to its essence, we hope audiences connect with the story in a fresh, relevant way for 2025.”
