News Release
EVANSVILLE — Crews working on the I-69 Ohio River Crossing project in southwest Indiana are entering the next phase of construction, with the delivery of nearly 200 large concrete beams for the Evansville approach.
The beams, each measuring 188 feet in length and weighing approximately 100 tons, will be used to construct three approach bridges that lead to the future I-69 bridge spanning the Ohio River. The Indiana Department of Transportation said beam deliveries will occur Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and continue through mid-September.
The beams are part of Section 3 of the I-69 Ohio River Crossing project, which focuses on building approach roadways and bridges in Evansville that will provide all-weather access to the construction site on the river. These structures will be used by both construction crews and future motorists.
According to the project team, 84 of the longest precast beams will be delivered and installed first, followed by 92 shorter beams expected to arrive later in the fall.
Drivers along U.S. 41 should expect short-term rolling closures on delivery days to allow trucks safe passage to the project site. Electronic message boards will be in place to notify motorists of the closures in advance.
Construction on the Indiana side of the I-69 approach is expected to wrap up by late 2026. Work on the Kentucky approach from Henderson is scheduled for completion later this year. Construction of the I-69 bridge itself is expected to begin after both approaches are completed, with the full crossing anticipated to open in 2031.
