FORT WAYNE — Indiana University Health marked a major milestone Wednesday in the construction of its $421 million hospital in Fort Wayne, placing the final steel beam during a topping out ceremony.
Construction on the facility began in September 2024, nearly one year after the project was first announced. Once complete, the hospital is expected to employ approximately 500 people.
The new IU Health hospital will feature 140 inpatient beds, 17 emergency room exam rooms, six additional exam rooms, three catheterization labs for advanced cardiac procedures and up to four endoscopy rooms for diagnostic and therapeutic services.
IU Health Fort Wayne President Brian Bauer told WPTA-TV the hospital is being built on a 300-acre property that will serve as the anchor for a broader community campus in southwest Allen County.
“We’re engaging with people right now,” Bauer said. “What do we bring to this campus to be partners with Southwest Allen County Schools and neighborhoods? We want to keep a lot of green space, trails, and just make it a showpiece for Fort Wayne.”
The project is scheduled for completion in May 2027.
