PIERCETON — A Pierceton park will soon feature a disc golf course with the help of a local Boy Scout.
During a Monday, July 14, Pierceton Town Council meeting, Town Superintendent Casey Boggs introduced Keaton Cornell, a recent Whitko High School graduate. For his Eagle Scout project, Cornell is planning to assemble a disc golf course at Pierceton-Washington Township Park.
“Keaton reached out to me and had interest in doing this,” said Boggs. “He put a lot of time and effort into it.”
The total cost for the project is $3,050, with Cornell looking into business sponsorships for the course’s baskets.
Council approved Cornell moving forward with the project.
Boggs also gave a brief update on signage throughout town. The installation of two “Welcome to Pierceton” signs is being worked on, with the signs to be placed near SR 13. A digital message sign will also be put in at Brower Park.
Multiple Ordinances
Council also approved multiple ordinances during the meeting, including rules of conduct on town properties and speed limit changes.
The rules of conduct were implemented to “protect (town) employees from harm, harassment and other misconduct …” and to “prevent disruption in the work done by town employees.”
Town Council President Glenn Hall said these rules were being passed due to security concerns experienced throughout the town.
With the speed limits, during the council’s April meeting, Town Marshal Jim Bumbaugh requested all town roads stay at 25 mph, with the exception of a few roads changing to 30 mph. Those include the entirety of Market Street, Arnolt Drive, Pequignot Drive and Matchette Drive; and Mill Street, from US 30 to Grant and Keith Streets.
Ordinances for fund transfers and limitations on coin use for payment of municipal fines, fees, and utility charges were also approved by council.
Police Update
Bumbaugh told council the hiring process for Pierceton Police Department’s deputy marshal position is still ongoing. He said he hoped to have someone hired by the council’s August meeting.
Bumbaugh also reminded citizens to lock vehicles and houses, noting recent issues occurring during the overnight hours.
“Just make sure your belongings and personal effects are secure,” said Bumbaugh. “If you witness anything you feel is suspicious, call 911 or flag us down if you see us.”
Council also:
- Approved the closure of Market Street from SR 13 to Washington Street from Aug. 1 to 2 for Pierceton Days, with the festival taking place on Aug. 2. Council Vice-President Matt Brubaker noted some residents who had joined in the planning process are looking to take over the reins for future Pierceton Days events.
- Heard the Heirloom Tomato Festival will take place on Aug. 23.
- Learned the clerk’s office will be closed from Aug. 11 to 13.
Council’s next meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at the Pierceton Community Building.
