STEUBEN COUNTY — Local farmers came to rescue cattle that were trapped in a semitrailer after a property damage crash.
At 2:40 p.m. Monday, June 30, the Indiana State Police responded to a property damage crash on US 20 near CR 900 West in Steuben County involving a livestock trailer.
The crash investigation showed a black 2015 Peterbilt semitractor/tractor pulling a livestock trailer was headed west on US 20 and was driving too fast while navigating the curves near Lane 102 West Otter Lake Road.
The semitractor-trailer combination rolled onto its side as it entered the curves. The driver was not injured, but the crash shut down US 20 in that area for several hours as local farmers arrived to help save the trapped cattle.
Unfortunately, some cattle did not live through the crash. About 55 cattle survived and were rescued by local farmers who had heard about the crash and began arriving on the scene to assist.
The farmers were able to work with troopers to get the cattle out of the trailer. They loaded them up and took the cattle to their farms where they will care for them until the transportation company can arrive and take them to their original destination.
The ISP were assisted at the crash by local farmers, the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department, Steuben County EMS, Steuben County EMA, Orland Fire Department and Bills Towing.
