YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO — With Independence Day fast approaching, fireworks retailers and customers alike are navigating potential financial fallout from new tariffs on Chinese imports. Despite concerns, at least one major fireworks chain says shoppers may still find holiday deals without sticker shock.
The industry faced uncertainty earlier this year when Pres. Donald Trump announced a 145% tariff on Chinese imports, including fireworks. The announcement temporarily stopped production for several companies, raising fears of higher prices and supply shortages ahead of the July Fourth holiday.
However — following a stockpiling during the policy’s court-ordered hold and a tariff reduction from 145% to 30% — stores appear to be well-stocked, and some major retailers say they are absorbing cost increases rather than passing them on to consumers. Phantom Fireworks, one of the nation’s largest fireworks sellers, indicated that any pricing adjustments would be handled selectively rather than broadly applied across all products.
Shoppers, like those stocking up days before the holiday, expressed surprise at both the availability and pricing of fireworks despite economic pressures. With many still eager to keep the “boom” in their celebrations, retailers are working to keep the tradition alive without busting budgets.
