SYRACUSE — As part of Chautauqua’s annual “Patriotic Speaker” series, the 2025 program will feature the 26th American President Teddy Roosevelt and his wife, Edith, portrayed by professional actors, Larry and Julia Marple. They will discuss relevant topics from the early 1900s. They will also share stories of their lives together, focusing on a love of nature and conservation.
The performance is from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Sunday, June 29, at Wawasee High School’s auditorium in Syracuse. The program is free to attend.
Teddy Roosevelt, at age 42, was the youngest person ever to be elected president. He left an indelible mark as president, by establishing the office of chief executive as the center of the federal government, a model still used today by all presidents. He also sought to bring order, social justice and fair dealings to American industry and commerce. In addition to being a successful political figure, Teddy Roosevelt was also a successful author, big game hunter and global adventurer.
Conservation was very important to Teddy Roosevelt, and you will learn about conservation and preservation throughout his life, how his family felt about it and how he saved more than 200 million acres of land for future generations to enjoy. He came to understand the healing power of nature as a boy and continued to have outdoor adventures the rest of his life.
Edith Roosevelt will reminisce about her life and family. She will describe what it was like to be the woman behind the man. As first lady, Edith Roosevelt and her secretary sent out official communications to journalists regarding both family announcements and official events.
Also in Syracuse, at 7:30 p.m. the annual Patriotic Pops concert by the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra is performing on the lawn at Oakwood Resort. Stop by the Chautauqua tent for a free flag and glow light. Attendance is free for this family-friendly event.
