Wawasee Community School Corporation Responds to Radio/TV Program Transition
News Release
SYRACUSE — In response to recent public discussion regarding the discontinuation of the Radio/TV program at Wawasee High School, the Wawasee Community School Corporation is providing clarification on the decision and the future of the program.
Superintendent Dr. Steve Troyer emphasized that the decision was not made lightly. “We sincerely value the contributions of Mr. Jeremy VanLue and 93.7 The Mix over the past decade. The impact of this program on our students and community has been significant, and we recognize the emotion surrounding this transition,” said Troyer.
The Radio/TV program has experienced a steady decline in student enrollment over the past several years. The majority of students enrolled in the program have come from Fairfield High School and other Career and Technical Education co-op partners.
Earlier this spring, Fairfield hired its own Radio/TV instructor to offer similar programming locally, leading to the return of 10 Fairfield students to their home district for the 2025–2026 school year. This shift leaves only three Wawasee students enrolled in the program for next year.
“In a year where we are already reducing 8–10 full-time positions from our Education Fund to maintain a balanced budget, we cannot justify maintaining a program that serves just three students,” Troyer said. “While we know this program has value, we have a responsibility to ensure that our resources are used in ways that benefit as many students as possible.”
Despite the change, the Radio/TV pathway will continue to be available through the district’s Pathways CTE cooperative, now hosted at Fairfield Jr.-Sr. High School. Wawasee students interested in pursuing this field will still have access to the program.
Additionally, Wawasee Community Schools remains committed to providing media production opportunities for its students. The district will continue to live-stream school events via its YouTube channel, ensuring students have hands-on experience with broadcasting and video production at their home school.
“We understand this program has meant a lot to many people,” said Troyer. “Our goal is to continue offering quality, sustainable educational opportunities while being responsible stewards of the resources entrusted to us.”
