LEESBURG — Upcoming events and projects taking place in town were discussed at the Leesburg Town Council meeting Monday, May 12.

The Leesburg Memorial Day parade will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 26. All parade participants are to be in place by 10:15 a.m. Veterans will meet at the Town Hall. The parade route will be south on Pearl Street and west on Prairie Street to the cemetery. A memorial service will be held at the cemetery following the parade.

In addition, dates were set at Monday’s meeting for the town’s annual garage sale and cleanup days. The town garage sale will be held Friday, June 6, and Saturday, June 7. Town cleanup days will be Friday, June 20, and Saturday, June 21.

Councilman Mitch Rader said microsealing road work is scheduled to begin in town on May 19. Pavement Solutions will be distributing notices containing information about the process and estimated time frame.

In another matter, Rader said he has been in discussions recently with Kosciusko County officials regarding who is responsible for School Street.

This was first brought up at a council meeting in December of 2023, as the road is in poor condition. At that time, Leesburg Street Commissioner Craig Charlton said that because the road is only 0.47 miles “and is so minuscule,” it has basically been forgotten about, although the county has received some funding from the state for the road. 

Charlton said a suggestion was made that the town of Leesburg take that road over; however, the town was not willing to annex the road in its current condition.  

At Monday night’s meeting, Rader said county officials agreed that the road is their responsibility and are aware that they need to fix it. According to Rader, Kosciusko County Highway Superintendent Steve Moriarty will be coming up with a plan on how to get the road in shape.

Lastly, Council President Tom Moore said he would like to plan ahead for the purchase of another digital speed limit sign.

“We may or may not have enough money in our spendable accounts right now to put one on Prairie Street and Van Buren and then School Street,” Moore said but asked that council members consider this for a future expenditure if there is money left over once the town is done paying for street repairs.

Moore said he thinks the digital speed sign the town currently has in place has been effective in addressing the speeding issues, so he would like to see more signs installed.

“Particularly on Van Buren and Pearl Streets … and School … because when you have Little League games, you’ve got a whole flock of kids over there running around, having fun.”

“And parking is across the street,” Rader pointed out.

Rader offered to speak with Kosciusko County officials to ask if they might have a digital speed limit sign that could be placed on School Street during the summer months.

• Reminders: No parking on any street between 3-5 a.m. (every day); No burning anything anytime; Please be mindful of what you flush.
• Two new Barnes septic pumps will be installed at Leesburg Elementary once school lets out for the year. In March, Council made the decision to purchase the pumps to replace the E/One pumps currently being used.
• The next regular meeting will be 6:30 p.m. June 9.
