PORTAGE — Recommendations for improvements to a section of SR 30 between the Valparaiso and Ohio border are being revised. Research from the ProPEL US 30 study aims to provide a variety of options for the Indiana Department of Transportation to consider in deciding future projects.
The currently-recommended option for the section between SR 49 and 421 is the “Expressway Lite” approach. This allows drivers to turn right into driveways to get in and out, with U-turns used for left turns.
However, Scott Sandstrom, project manager of CDM Smith, says the idea has drawn feedback from residents in the Wanatah area who are worried about losing access.

Many who submitted comments, Sandstrom said, preferred that the 30 U.S. remain as it is out of concern for character and economic impact on the town. Others mentioned access for residents and emergency vehicles.
Sandstrom said planners are considering ways to maintain access across SR 30 and increase the amount of U-turn locations.
The project team continues to hold office hours for the community. One is scheduled for Tuesday, May 20 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Valparaiso Fire Training Center on Evans Avenue.
