KENDALLVILLE — Families can celebrate Mother’s Day at the Mid-America Windmill Museum’s annual Kite Day on Sunday, May 11, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the museum grounds at 732 S. Allen Chapel Road.
Admission is free for the event, which offers a range of family-friendly activities, including guided museum tours and kite-flying opportunities on the museum’s spacious grounds.
The Hoosier Kitefliers will be on site to help children build and fly their own kites at no cost. Dr. Tom Jansen will return with his personal kite collection soaring overhead and will be available to answer questions and offer assistance.

Children will also receive free Pizza Hut Personal Pan Pizza coupons while supplies last. Guests are encouraged to bring a picnic with their families. Additional refreshments will be available for purchase.
Founded in 1992, the Mid-America Windmill Museum is operated by the Kendallville Windmill Museum and Historical Society. The museum was the vision of C. Russell Baker and fellow society members, who aimed to create a destination that preserves and educates the public about the history of wind power.
The museum features more than 50 restored American water-pumping windmills, displayed both indoors and along a graveled walking trail. A noteworthy exhibit is a replica of the Robertson Post Windmill, a 17th-century-style grist mill originally constructed near Jamestown, Va.
The museum also houses all 11 models of windmills once manufactured by Kendallville’s own Flint & Walling Company, including the “Original Star,” patented in the 1870s, and the Model No. 37 Star Zephyr — the company’s final windmill model, produced until 1954.
Flint & Walling, established in 1866, began as a manufacturer of windmills and water pumps and continues to operate in downtown Kendallville, now producing submersible and booster pumps.
