Hal was born on Aug. 25, 1962, in Detroit, the son of Virginia “Ginger” (Bergstrom) Smith and John Lewis Smith. In his youth, Hal lived in Warsaw, where he attended Warsaw Community High School. As a student there, he was actively involved in sports … basketball, football and baseball, and he also served as student body president. He moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., and graduated from Mitchell High School in 1981. Hal continued playing football as a student at the University of Indianapolis and then graduated with honors from Indiana University in Bloomington with a degree in business.

Throughout his life, he loved spending time having a nice cold beer with his friends; he never tired of watching IU basketball and football; and he was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. Hal also had a real passion for his 1969 Chevelle convertible.
He will be lovingly remembered by his two sisters, Christine “Christy” (William) Cuban, Winona Lake, and Teresa (Paul) Beckwith, Holland, Mich., as well as by many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.
