GOSHEN — With warmer weather arriving and spring in full swing, now is the perfect time for farmers and animal owners to prioritize the health and protection of their animals and livestock.
One of the best ways to do this is through core vaccinations, which help prevent serious diseases from entering and spreading on farms — whether you raise livestock, horses, or both.
For horse owners, it is especially important to stay up to date with essential vaccines like rabies, tetanus, West Nile virus and others recommended by your veterinarian. Young animals might also need extra protection as they grow, so be sure they receive their core vaccines, such as those for clostridium.
If you are preparing animals for breeding, now is also the time to review your vaccination program. Proper vaccinations before breeding can help protect both the dam and her offspring throughout gestation.
Always consult your veterinarian to create a plan tailored to your farm and animals. It’s good to have your vet out for vaccinations in order to see how your animals look on a normal basis, as well as maintaining a healthy vet-client-patient relationship. A little prevention now can save a lot of trouble and money later. Keep your animals safe and healthy this spring!
