WARSAW — A Warsaw man was arrested for allegedly burglarizing a residence and stealing items.
Matthew Aaron Edward Schaefer, 29, 3489 W. 100S Lot 5, Warsaw, is charged with burglary, a level 4 felony; residential entry, a level 6 felony; and theft, a class A misdemeanor.
On April 4, a Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to a report of a burglary at a Warsaw residence. The property owner said two people were evicted from the home in February, with their personal belongings remaining in the home during the eviction process.
According to court documents, a maintenance worker discovered the residence’s front door was unlocked and its back door was forced open. The property owner noticed some of the former tenants’ personal belongings were missing, including a television, bed frame, and mattress.
A neighbor said he witnessed Schaefer walking around the home and carrying a bed frame from the residence. The KCSO deputy went to Schaefer’s home and noticed a mattress, bed frame, and television inside, with all the items matching descriptions of the stolen belongings.
Schaefer said he knew the residence’s previous tenants were evicted and told police the property owner asked him to keep an eye on the home. He admitted to stealing items from the residence.
Schaefer was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail on April 9.
