WARSAW — Protestors gathered outside the Kosciusko County Court House Saturday, April 5 as part of the nationwide Hands Off! movement protesting actions taken by the Trump administration.
At the rally totaling around 75 protestors, signs singled out policies such as cuts made by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, support to the war-torn country of Ukraine, and the dismantling of the Department of Education.
One protestor carried a blue, pink and white trans flag, while another flew a yellow Gadsden flag reading “Don’t Tread On Me.”
“Save: Veteran’s Benefits,” read one of the signs, referencing budget cuts and layoffs to the Office of Veteran’s Affairs. One such cut included terminating contract funding for a new VA medical facility in Indianapolis, planned to replace the beyond-capacity and end-of-lifecycle Roudebush Medical Center.
“Honk If U Never Drunk Texted War Plans,” read another, referring to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth sending classified war communications to an Atlantic reporter over messaging app Signal earlier this month.
The nationwide “Hands Off” rally drew an estimated 3 million demonstrators across 1,400 locations in all 50 states. The rallies, which contested a variety of policies from Trump and DOGE on issues such as immigration, economics and diplomacy, are currently the largest protests of Trump’s second term.
The phrase “Hands Off” appeared on signs reading “Hands Off Social Security,” “Hands Off Our Schools” and “Hands Off Our Democracy.”
These demonstrations were coordinated by a variety of local, statewide and national organizations. In Indiana, protests were held in Goshen, Fort Wayne, South Bend, Lafayette, Bloomington and Indianapolis.
Lafayette’s rally spurred a physical altercation between a man wearing a Trump shirt and a protestor, ending with the man being temporarily detained by police after grabbing a rifle from his car.
