WARSAW — A Michigan woman will serve four years on probation for possessing methamphetamine.
Jessica Lee Hughes, 38, Homer, Mich., was charged with possession of methamphetamine, a level 4 felony. Three additional criminal charges were dismissed as part of a plea agreement.
Hughes was sentenced in Kosciusko Circuit Court on Monday, Jan. 20.
For meth possession, Kosciusko Circuit Court Judge Matthew Buehler sentenced Hughes to four years in the Indiana Department of Correction, with the entirety of the sentence suspended on probation. The sentence will be served back-to-back to two additional criminal cases.
Hughes has 124 days of jail time credit, plus good time credit as calculated. Buehler also said he had no objection to Hughes transferring her probation to DeKalb County if she so desired.
At sentencing, Defense Attorney Scott Reust requested Hughes receive a structured sentence that allowed her to receive assistance with substance abuse.
Prosecutor Brad Voelz said Hughes ultimately pled guilty to the crime she did commit, noting Hughes’ co-defendant, Michael A. Jordan, is the person more culpable in this case for dealing drugs.
“I know what I did was wrong and I’m sorry for it,” said Hughes.
On Sept. 18, 2024, a Warsaw Police officer saw a vehicle operating without a functioning license plate light. Hughes was identified as a passenger in the vehicle.
According to court documents, a K9 unit at the scene alerted to narcotics inside the vehicle. Upon searching the vehicle, officers found 16.3 grams of meth.
Jordan has a pretrial conference at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27.
