50 Years Of Safe Drinking Water Act Celebrated

GREENWOOD, IND. — Indiana American Water, a subsidiary of American Water, the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the U.S., is joining the water industry in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Safe Drinking Water Act, a landmark law that has safeguarded public health by protecting drinking water quality since its passage on Dec. 16, 1974.
Indiana American Water recognizes the Safe Drinking Water Act’s 50-year impact on water quality and emphasizes the need for continued investment to address emerging challenges in water safety and quality. The company expects to invest more than $200 million annually and nearly $1.6 billion over the next five to six years in infrastructure repairs and replacement and system resiliency. This investment aligns with the spirit of the Safe Drinking Water Act and its mission to safeguard public health for American Water customers and communities across the nation.
