KOSCIUSKO COUNTY — Alyssa Schmucker was chosen as the new Kosciusko County Auditor at the Thursday, Aug. 15 caucus.
Alyssa Schmucker and Patti Cook sought to fill the remaining term of Kosciusko County Auditor Rhonda Helser. Helser submitted her resignation effective Aug. 31. Schmucker will fill the remaining approximate 2 1/2 years of the term.
Cook and Schmucker were allowed a maximum of three minutes to address the precinct committeemen voting caucus.
Schmucker spoke first, describing her eight years of experience working in the auditor’s office, including serving as Helser’s chief deputy since Jan. 1, 2023. She described the responsibilities in her current role as well as the roles that the auditor takes on, stating experience will be essential to the auditor’s success. She also shared her experience with EMS, veteran care and other areas of service.
Cook then addressed the voters, sharing her experience in Etna Green government as the clerk-treasurer, an office manager for 20 years and a special needs homeschooler. She also shared that prayer and encouragement from others led her to file her candidacy. She said she is ready for a new challenge.
While the ballots were being counted, Helser stood and said a few words of thanks to the folks at the auditor’s office. She also reiterated that she is not ill, she is just retiring and enjoying time with family. She stated she will be available to help in the community.
After the ballots were cast and counted, Schmucker was announced as the new county auditor.
Schmucker said, “I will do my best to learn (the things I need to) and serve the people of the county. I just want to thank Michelle, who was the auditor before Rhonda, and Rhonda. I look forward to (getting started).”
