New Izaak Walton League of America Chapter in Argos to Hold Membership Open House
News Release
ARGOS — At its annual convention in July, the Izaak Walton League of America approved the formation of a new chapter in Argos called the Marshall County Chapter that will operate on the property once owned by the Argos Chapter of the League, which closed in 2023.
The Izaak Walton League fights for clean air and water, healthy fish and wildlife habitat and conservation of our natural resources for future generations. The League plays a unique role in supporting community-based science and local conservation and has a long legacy of shaping sound national policy.
In 1926, an Argos Chapter of the Izaak Walton League was founded. It purchased property including fishponds and a clubhouse. Later in the 1930s, a fish hatchery was also constructed. The hatchery, in association with the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries, had a capacity to produce about 370,000 fingerlings per year. In December 2011, the chapter property was added to the National Register of Historic Places. That chapter closed in 2023.
The new chapter was formed by local residents with assistance from the Indiana Division of the Izaak Walton League. As spelled out in its articles of incorporation, the objective of the chapter is to “conserve, maintain, protect and restore the natural resources of the United States of America, including… soil, air, woods, waters and wildlife.” The chapter also aims to promote public awareness, enjoyment and wholesome use of the nation’s natural resources.
“The creation of this new Marshall County Chapter underscores the enduring interest in community-based conservation and outdoor recreation, which have been hallmarks of the Izaak Walton League for more than a century,” said Dale Braun, chairman of the League’s Executive Board. “We welcome the chapter and encourage people to learn about the League and consider joining the chapter.”
The chapter will hold a membership open house at 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11, 7184 16th Road, Argos.
Membership is open to any person who supports the goals and policies of the chapter.
