PIERCETON — The Pierceton Redevelopment Commission continued discussions on ideas for the usage of tax increment finance monies during a July 25 meeting.
Currently, the commission is looking into using the monies for digital signage, welcome signs and a new pavilion at Brower Park.
A spending plan for the TIF fund is due in December. The monies can be used as long as the proposed projects benefit the employees of the TIF district. TIF monies have several permitted uses, including public safety projects, recreation facilities, public infrastructure and site improvements for private developments.
Pierceton Redevelopment Commission Member and Town Superintendent Casey Boggs said he received two quotes from contractors on the construction of a 30-foot by 40-foot pavilion at Brower Park. Boggs said the current pavilion is dilapidated. Pierceton Redevelopment Commission President Matt Brubaker said a pavilion of that size would be large enough for band performances. Boggs said a basic survey of the area will be done by Walker & Associates, Columbia City. One of the contractors who provided a quote for the pavilion said they wanted a land survey completed before giving more information on the placement of bathrooms at the park. The restroom area at Brower Park would be separate from the pavilion.
Pierceton Redevelopment Commission Member Glenn Hall said he found two companies interested in working with the town on signage along US 30 and in town limits. However, Hall said both companies would need to see design work before providing quotes. He suggested the possibility of holding a town-wide contest for the creation of a town logo and slogan. The commission decided to bring that idea to the Pierceton Town Council meeting on Aug. 12.
Commission members will continue working on quotes for signs and speaking with potential companies to work with on projects.
