WARSAW — A Warsaw man will serve two years in prison for preventing a woman from leaving a residence and battering her.
Ryan Paul Nicholas Rautenberg, 36, 342 S. 325E, Warsaw, was charged with criminal confinement, a level 5 felony; domestic battery resulting in injury, a level 6 felony; and invasion of privacy, a class A misdemeanor. Five additional criminal charges were all dismissed as part of a plea agreement.
Rautenberg was sentenced in Kosciusko Superior Court One on Thursday, July 18.
For criminal confinement, Kosciusko Superior Court One Judge Karin McGrath sentenced Rautenberg to three years in the Indiana Department of Correction, with the entirety suspended on formal probation.
Rautenberg received a two-year DOC sentence for domestic battery and a one-year DOC sentence for invasion of privacy. Both of these sentences will be served at the same time, but back-to-back to Rautenberg’s sentence for criminal confinement.
In total, Rautenberg received a five-year sentence, with two years executed and three years suspended on probation.
He has 51 days of jail time credit. A no-contact order between Rautenberg and the victim was terminated. Rautenberg is also prohibited from possessing firearms.
McGrath said she would not approve Rautenberg for any type of alternative sentencing due to his criminal history.
On Dec. 5, 2023, a Warsaw Police officer responded to a battery report at a residence. The officer spoke with a woman, whose left eye was purple and swollen shut. She also had a bruise on her forehead, cut on her lower lip, and scratches on her neck.
According to court documents, the woman said she and a child visited Rautenberg on Dec. 1, 2023. At one point, Rautenberg became upset and hit the back of the woman’s head three times with a closed fist. As a result, the woman lost consciousness. When she regained consciousness, Rautenberg hit her head against the ground and stepped on her upper back.
The woman attempted to leave, but Rautenberg moved a couch in front of a door to prevent her from doing so, grabbed her hair and pulled her to the ground. He also took the woman’s cellphone and wrapped the residence’s front door with material similar to a bungee cord, which prevented it from opening.
On Dec. 5, 2023, the woman found her cellphone, texted a relative, and left the home with the child while Rautenberg slept.
