WARSAW — Two people from Fort Wayne were arrested after possessing marijuana and allegedly trying to prevent law enforcement from finding it.
Jaylin Jamaris Freeman, 31, Fort Wayne, is charged with obstruction of justice, a level 6 felony; possession of marijuana, a class B misdemeanor; and possession of marijuana with a prior conviction, a class A misdemeanor.
L Darrah Carlene Hughes, 26, Fort Wayne, is charged with obstruction of justice, a level 6 felony; and possession of marijuana, a class B misdemeanor.
On March 8, a Warsaw Police officer noticed a Chevrolet Impala traveling east on US 30. He saw the Impala approach another vehicle and follow it, nearly bumper to bumper, for a significant distance. The officer discovered the Impala’s owner, identified as Freeman, had a suspended driving status and pulled the Impala over.
According to court documents, as the Impala pulled over, the officer noticed a small bag being thrown out of the vehicle. While approaching the vehicle, the officer noticed the strong smell of marijuana. Freeman was driving the vehicle and Hughes was a passenger.
Freeman denied throwing any items out of the vehicle. An additional responding officer said he found a plastic bag containing marijuana outside of the vehicle.
Hughes said Freeman told her to discard a plastic bag containing marijuana by throwing it out the vehicle’s window. She also said they purchased the marijuana earlier that day in Chicago.
Freeman was previously convicted of marijuana possession in Allen County in May 2013.
Freeman was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail on March 8. Hughes has already been arrested and released on bond.
