ELKHART — Indiana State Police troopers are investigating a single-vehicle, fatal crash on the Indiana Toll Road in Elkhart County.
At 5:58 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, deputies with the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to reports of a vehicle that crashed into a wooded area near the CR 10 overpass for the Toll Road. When deputies arrived, they discovered a dark blue 2021 Dodge Ram in the trees that appeared to have come from the Toll Road, prompting a response from ISP.
Preliminary investigation by ISP Trooper Matt Henson indicates the Dodge was traveling west on the Toll Road when it left the north side of the roadway, crashing through the guardrail near mile marker 87.7. The Dodge then rolled, coming to a rest in the wooded area where it was found. The driver, Mauro Cesar Amaya Reyes, 18, Middlebury, was ejected during the crash and pronounced dead at the scene. Family has been notified.
Excessive speed and alcohol are suspected to be factors in this crash. A seat belt is not believed to have been utilized at the time of the crash.
The right lane of the Toll Road was closed for crash investigation but reopened around 9 a.m. Sunday.
ISP was assisted by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office, Cleveland Township Fire and EMS, the Elkhart County Coroner’s Office, Tom’s 24 Hour Towing, and ITRCC Maintenance.
