SYRACUSE — Sidney W. Gabbard, 73, North Rumpelstiltzkin Dr., Cromwell, disregarded the crossing signal and crossing arms in a collision Wednesday, Nov. 15.
The crash was at the railroad crossing on North Warner Road, north of East Cornelius Road, Syracuse. The crash between the truck and an eastbound train was reported at 9:14 a.m.
Gabbard was not injured.
According to the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department, Gabbard was traveling southbound in a 2009 GMC Sierra truck. When he came to the railroad crossing, he disregarded the crossing signal and arms, traveled onto the tracks and hit the right side of a westbound CSX engine.
The CSX engine 2020 was operated by Engineer Nik Gigli. Gigli was not injured.
The right side of the engine was damaged from the front to the middle of the first engine.
Tracks were immediately inspected and no damage found.
Gigli told police he observed the truck disregard the signal and attempt to cross the tracks.
Damage was estimated up to $10,000.
