WARSAW — A South Bend man was recently arrested for allegedly stealing alcohol from two Warsaw businesses.
Corey Raymone Henderson, 42, South Bend, is charged with theft and sentence enhancement theft, both level 6 felonies; and two counts of theft, both class A misdemeanors.
On Jan. 4, a Warsaw Police officer went to Handy Spot Liquor regarding a theft report involving a group of individuals who previously stole alcohol from the store. On Nov. 14, 2022, two women and a man entered the store. The man asked an employee for help in the wine section.
According to court documents, when the employee left the register, the two women stuffed various bottles of tequila in bags they carried into the store and left without purchasing the alcohol.
The same man and one of the women involved in stealing tequila returned to the store on Jan. 4. While the man distracted the employee, the woman again stole various bottles of tequila. Upon further investigation, law enforcement identified the man involved in the thefts as Henderson.
As a result of the Nov. 14, 2022, and Jan. 4 thefts, a total of $382.95 of alcohol were stolen from the store.
Henderson was sentenced for a separate theft case in Kosciusko County on Jan. 4. Fifteen minutes after leaving the Kosciusko County Justice Building after being sentenced, Henderson and a woman went to Handy Spot Liquor and stole tequila.
On Jan. 30, a Warsaw Police officer spoke with a Kroger employee about two people stealing several bottles of high-end wine from the store between the dates of Dec. 26, 2022, and Dec. 31, 2022.
Surveillance footage showed a man and woman taking multiple bottles of wine from the store without paying for them. During the investigation, the man was shown making a purchase while using a Kroger loyalty card.
On Feb. 13, a Warsaw detective completed a subpoena on the loyalty card and discovered it belonged to a relative of Shamika D. Mitchell, South Bend.
Upon further investigation, law enforcement discovered Henderson was the man working cooperatively with Mitchell in the thefts.
The total value of the stolen wine was $791.94.
For the Kroger theft case, Mitchell has already been arrested and has a pretrial conference on Dec. 13, in Kosciusko Superior Court Two.
Henderson was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail on Oct. 31.
