Yellow Closure Will Affect 800 Indiana Union Truckers
News Release
INDIANA — Around 800 union Indiana truckers are left unemployed after Yellow Corp.’s unexpected closure. Ultimately, the closure has laid off 30,000 employees. Over 20,000 of the employees are represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Yellow housed four hubs in Indiana: Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, South Bend and Evansville.
The Tennessee-based truck company permanently closed July 30 and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection a week after. Yellow was the third largest carrier in the country. In their bankruptcy filing, Yellow reported total assets of $2.15 billion and a total debt of $2.59 billion. In 2020, the company received a $700 million Paycheck Protection Program loan.
When announcing their intent to file for bankruptcy, Yellow shoved blame onto the Teamsters for the company’s failure and its members unemployment.
The company was known for its unique business model, which involved delivering freight for multiple customers on the same truck. The company felt the burn when they started acquiring and merging with their unionized competition.
