WARSAW — Elvis Presley is celebrated every year in August. For 2023, Elvis Week is celebrated Aug. 9-17, which coincides with the anniversary of his death, Aug. 16. The dates are made public long in advance. The week honors the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, his music and films, and all things Presley in a characteristically flashy and ecstatic manner. The event is a form of pilgrimage and a wonder for music enthusiasts and fans all over the world.
Elvis Presley — widely known as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll — was one of the most dominant and famous performers of the 20th century. Rising from humble beginnings, this talented teenager was picked up by Sun Records after a producer heard his audition tape. He accomplished quite a bit in his short life. In 1958 he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served as a soldier in Germany, leaving the Army after two years with sergeant stripes. He won his first Grammy in 1967. Starting in 1969, he played to sold-out venues in Las Vegas and all over the U.S., giving nearly 1,100 performances. In fact, his last performance took place On June 26, 1977, at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis. On Aug. 16, 1977, Presley passed away from a heart attack at his home in Graceland, Tenn.
How can you celebrate Elvis Week? Listen to his old hits — including “Jailhouse Rock,” “Hound Dog,” “Love Me Tender” and “All Shook Up” — to have a rock ‘n’ roll day.
Watch his movies. Watch one of Elvis’ 30-plus films, including “Blue Hawaii,” “Jailhouse Rock” and “Change of Habit.” All of these are nicknamed “Elvis movies” since they have light comedy-romance interlaced with musical interludes. Also, check out the 2022 biographical film “Elvis.” If you’re a Presley fan, you won’t regret it.
Hold your own candlelight vigil. Who says you have to go to Graceland to honor this talented icon? On the anniversary of his death, stay at home and hold your own candlelight vigil. Take some time to think about his life and the good things he did.
Elvis Week is a fitting tribute to his life and legacy. He inspired an entire generation of people and influenced the rock ‘n’ roll genre. This week honors and remembers the man who captured an entire world.
