Father-Son Team Wins Barbecue Contest
News Release
GOSHEN — Over the weekend, The Slabaugh team won Grand Champion overall the the Elkhart County 4-H Fair’s Byler Linehart Cook Off. This was the team’s second year entering the competition together.
Mark Slabaugh, Goshen, and his son Neil, New Paris, won first place in ground beef, lamb cut, pork cut and ground pork. The father-son duo placed third in the beef cut. Their Grand Champion win was for their ground beef burger— a mushroom and swiss.
The pair’s favorite dish they presented the judges was the lamb chislic. Lamb chislic hails from South Dakota and it is fried, skewered cubes of red meat, served on a toothpick with dipping sauce.
Mark had first tried lamb chislic while he was out visiting his youngest son at his home in Nebraska, near the South Dakota border.
Watching his father grill from a young age, Neil decided the most important part of grilling a good burger is making sure to not overcook it and to use a really good, quality piece of meat.
The beef the team used in the competition comes from Mark’s own farm in Goshen, Slabaugh Farms.
Karen Meade was the winner of this year’s Best of Michiana Ribs Contest.
