Staff Report
SOUTH BEND — Work to upgrade commuter rail services in northwest Indiana continues and appears to be on track.
The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District’s project to double-track the South Shore Line between Gary and Michigan City is edging toward 80 percent completion, according to reporting July 24 from Michael Gallenberger at Lakeshore Public Radio.
The second track is set to open next May.
Another project for a new West Lake Corridor from Hammond to Dyer is progressing, too, and is about 35 percent done, according to the report. The corridor might open in May 2025.
Other work to plan for a new route to South Bend International Airport might be completed early next year. The commuter district board also recently OK’d planning for a possible future extension to downtown South Bend, Gallenberger reported.
